Former ZAF Commander Chimese Survives Last Minute Jail Scare

FORMER Zambia Air Force (ZAF) Commander Lieutenant General Eric Chimese, his wife Sharon Grey, and Chita Lodges managing director James Chungu yesterday narrowly survived being remanded in custody on a bench warrant for delaying to return to court on time.

Lusaka Magistrate Nsunge Chanda was about to issue the bench warrant within five minutes when Chimese and his two co-accused hurriedly walked back to the dock after the court had refused to adjourn the matter, following an application by a stand-in lawyer on grounds that lead lawyer Kelvin Bwalya Fube and another senior counsel were out of jurisdiction.

After refusing to adjourn the matter, Ms. Chanda stood it down for some minutes for the accused persons to confer with the available lawyers and when the case was recalled, none of the accused persons nor their stand-in lawyers were in court.
