The Minister of African Integration, Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad, Cheikh Niang reaffirmed, on the occasion of the closing ceremony of the 89th session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), Senegal’s commitment to strengthening continental mechanisms for the protection of fundamental rights.
The Minister of African Integration, Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad, Cheikh Niang, chaired the closing ceremony of the 89th session of the ACHPR on October 21, 2026, in Dakar. Organized from October 12 to 21, this meeting takes place in a context marked by the 45th anniversary of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the 40th anniversary of the Commission.
“Coincident with the 45th anniversary of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the 40th anniversary of the Commission, this session provided a positive assessment of the progress made in the protection and promotion of human rights on the African continent. It was also an opportunity to reflect on the best ways to address the current and future challenges that hinder the full enjoyment of fundamental rights by African populations,” underlines the communication from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Established under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the ACHPR contributes in particular to the dissemination of the principles of the Charter, the interpretation of its provisions, and the examination of periodic reports presented by States.
