CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATION DISMAYED AT ELECTION VIOLENCE IN SESHEKE
Elections are won through the ballot and not the bullet*
The Zambia Organization Against Tribalism Violence and Voter Apathy, ‘ZATVVA,’ is dismayed at the continued violence that has characterized the Sesheke by-elections.
The organization feels that the continued acts of violence which are reported to be perpetrated by the United Party for National Development [UPND] are a gross violation of human rights and an abrogation of the electoral code of conduct.
The UPND must not take the Zambian people for granted and think their desire to win a seat at whatsoever cost, gives them the right to cause damage to life and property of innocent people.
Zambia is a country governed by laws and those laws must be adhered to by every citizen without exception.
The harm that has been caused to the residents of Sesheke will go beyond the campaign period and election day as it will be permanently printed on the minds of the poor men, women and children who have to pick up the pieces after all is said and done.
We commend President Lungu for his continued call for peace and for constantly reminding the members of his party, the PF, to refrain from any acts of violence and not to succumb to any acts of provocation.
We equally call on the president of the UPND to show leadership by bringing his members to order.
Politics cannot be practiced with total disregard for human life and property.
We call for civility and humility by all parties involved.
