Carrots: Senegal lifts the freeze on imports in the face of soaring prices
The Ministry of Industry and Trade has decided to lift, as of October 14, 2026, the freezing measure on carrot imports. This decision aims to strengthen supply to the national market, marked by a drastic drop in stocks and a sharp rise in consumer prices.
In a circular letter dated October 15, 2026, the Minister of Industry and Commerce informs the services concerned of the resumption of carrot imports. This measure comes following a meeting of the Interprofessional Carrot of Senegal (IPCA), held on Wednesday October 14 in the premises of the Market Regulation Agency (ARM), at Cité Keur Gorgui, in Dakar.
According to the document, the freeze on imports, which came into force on December 10, 2025, had allowed local production to cover market needs for ten months. However, recent analysis of the commercial situation revealed a significant drop in available stocks, leading to a sharp increase in prices for consumers.
Faced with this situation, the authorities decided to authorize imports again in order to guarantee a regular supply to the market and to contribute to better availability of the product.
Imports subject to a quota
However, the lifting of the freeze remains regulated. The import authorization is subject to a quota and remains valid until November 15, 2026, the strict deadline, specifies the circular letter.
The Director General of Customs, the Director of Internal Trade and the Director of Plant Protection are the main recipients of this instruction. They are invited to take the necessary measures to facilitate its implementation.
This decision marks an adjustment to the carrot supply policy, after several months of suspension of imports intended to promote the sale of local production.
