The new framework of the Mining Code will benefit Senegal

The new framework of the Mining Code should encourage increased involvement of the national private sector in the various mining value chains, and will allow Senegal to benefit more from its resources.

The announcement was made this Thursday by the Minister of Mines and Geology, Cheikhou Oumar Seck. Mr. Seck spoke on the Aps microphone. He recalled that the Codes of 1988 and 2003 had notably made it possible to attract investors and modernize the legal framework, while that of 2016 had strengthened State participation and introduced several mechanisms, notably dedicated funds.

“Unfortunately, as we speak, there are many of these measures that have not been applied,” he noted. The Minister of Mines and Geology, who spoke during a workshop dedicated to sharing the draft law on the Mining Code, informed that a reform, initiated almost two years ago, was developed with the various stakeholders in the sector.

The Senegalese mining framework is not devoid of rules. The 2016 Code was already relatively structured. The difficulties relate more to control and enforcement.
