Dissolution of the National Assembly: “There is no fixation” according to the President of the Republic

On the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, spoke in an exclusive interview given to France 24 and RFI on several major issues in Senegalese and regional news. Asked about the possibility of a dissolution of the National Assembly from December 2, the date on which this constitutional prerogative could be exercised, the Head of State was careful not to exclude this possibility.

“There is no fixation” on the option of dissolution, he clarified. The President of the Republic thus recalls that he has, under the Constitution, this prerogative and suggests that his decision will depend on the configuration presented to him. “Depending on what we have in front of us, we will decide,” he declared.

Current President of ECOWAS, Bassirou Diomaye Faye also returned to his relations with the member countries of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), which left the regional organization.

The choice of Mali as the first destination for his trip within the framework of this regional responsibility is not insignificant. The President, however, affirms that his approach is part of a logic of dialogue and respect for the sovereignty of the States concerned. “My objective is to guarantee coexistence between the two blocs and the free movement of people and goods,” he explained.

Faced with the rupture between ECOWAS and the three AES countries (Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger), Dakar intends to favor an approach based on maintaining links between the populations and economies of the region. “We have no forbidden meaning,” affirms the head of state.
