Election of the UN SG: “We are discussing with those who vote”, underlines President Diomaye Faye

On the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, spoke about the candidacy of his predecessor Macky Sall for the post of Secretary General of the UN, in an interview granted to France 24 and RFI.

Asked by France 24 and RFI about the chances of former Senegalese President Macky Sall to succeed Antonio Guterres, whose mandate expires on December 31, the head of state believes this candidacy remains fully in the race.

“We are discussing with those who vote who holds the decision,” said Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

Who better today to defend a better place for Africa than President Macky Sall, he said. And to continue, alluding to President Macky Sall “who suffered the pangs of debt which weighed him down in relation to the ambitions he had and which he shared with many countries in the Third World or the South”.

A way of reminding us that the process of appointing the next Secretary General of the United Nations remains wide open. The final decision will depend in particular on the position of the five permanent members of the Security Council (United States, Russia, China, France and United Kingdom) before the appointment by the General Assembly.

“I think it is our duty to support him as Senegalese, to support him because we believe today that the place that should be that of Africa within the UN cannot be better defended than by an African,” adds the President of the Republic.
