Mbour: ten people arrested after an unauthorized exit from Kankourang

Ten people were arrested in Mbour by the Urban Security of the Central Police Station, with the reinforcement of elements of the GMI and the BIP, for having organized an exit from Kankourang outside the framework set by the authorities.

The operation targeted several cultural cells commonly called “lël”, which would have brought out the Kankourang even though they were not among the entities authorized by the prefectural decree of August 28, 2026 governing the “Mandingo September” festivities.

According to the security forces, the groups concerned had been informed of the provisions in force and invited to an information meeting organized by the police. Despite these reminders, they reportedly continued their activities.

The interventions carried out in different “lël” also made it possible, according to the police, to seize seven machetes, four traditional drums as well as an Indian hemp cone found in the possession of one of the accused.

The ten suspects were placed in police custody before being referred to the public prosecutor at the Mbour High Court. They will have to answer in particular for non-compliance with an administrative measure, participation in a prohibited demonstration, disturbing public order and possession of a bladed weapon.

The prefectural system authorizes the exit from Kankourang for eight cells: Thiocé Ouest, Santesou, Thiocé Est, Sadio Kunda, Woyinka, Juju Cissé Kunda, Diamagueune and Kuyamba.
