Gandon: the first pipeline of the northern segment laid September 11, 2026

The first pipeline of the Northern Segment was officially laid in Gandon under the presidency of the Minister of Energy and Oil Abdourahmane Diouf. A new stage in the construction of the national gas transport network. It thus opens the concrete phase of creating an infrastructure intended to connect the GTA gas hub to the Gandon power station.

In Gandon, the authorities officially laid the first pipeline of the Northern Segment of the Senegal Gas Network (RGS). After studies, mobilization of financing and technical preparation, the project is now entering its construction phase. Approximately 85 kilometers long, the Northern Segment includes 45 km of offshore pipeline to Léona, in the Louga region, and 40 km of onshore pipeline to Gandon. It is designed to transport up to 300 million cubic feet of gas per day. For the Minister of Energy and Oil, El Hadji Abdourahmane Diouf, this infrastructure should make it possible to transform national gas into a development lever. “Behind this steel structure lies a national ambition: to make Senegalese gas not only a resource that we produce, but an energy that we control, that we transport and that we transform in the service of our development,” he declared.

The Northern Segment must in particular contribute to reducing the economy’s exposure to imported fuels and fluctuations in international markets. Gas must gradually be used to improve the security and competitiveness of the electricity supply. The government is thus aiming for conditions for electricity that is “less costly to produce, more reliable and more accessible”. The minister specifies, however, that the reduction in costs will depend on the entire chain, in particular the availability of gas, the cost of its transport and the performance of power plants and networks. The ambition goes beyond electricity production.

Through “Gas-to-Industry”, the network must gradually bring gas closer to industrial zones and companies that consume a lot of energy. The objective is to strengthen national value chains, business competitiveness and job creation. For Pape Momar Lô, general director of RGS, “today, we are entering the time of construction”. He praised the mobilization of the State, financial partners and businesses around the project. The first pipeline of the Northern Segment finally constitutes the first link in a larger network. Preparations for the Green, Blue and Orange Segments are already underway. The objective is to gradually connect gas resources to power plants, industrial centers and consumption areas, in order to transform Senegal’s gas potential into economic value and jobs.
