Gamou 2026: Vast security operation in Thiès and Tivaouane
A few days before Gamou 2026, the National Police are strengthening their security measures in the sensitive areas of Thiès and Tivaouane. A vast operation carried out during the night of August 21 to 22 resulted in the arrest of 50 people and the seizure of several dozen items.
On the night of August 21 to 22, 2026, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., the Regional Public Security Service conducted a large-scale security operation in the cities of Thiès and Tivaouane.
The operation, led by Chief Police Commissioner Sofiétou Mbaye, mobilized staff from the various police stations, with the support of elements of the Mobile Intervention Group (GMI) of Thiès and the search brigades.
The security forces focused their interventions on criminogenic areas and strategic axes, with the aim of strengthening the police presence and preventing acts of delinquency as the Gamou approached.
In Thiès, 35 people were arrested. Among them, 31 were for identity verification, three for obvious public drunkenness and one for non-execution of a court decision. The police also stopped five vehicles and nine motorcycles for various offenses, while 84 items were seized.
In Tivaouane, 15 people were arrested. Eleven were arrested for identity verification, two for obvious public drunkenness, one for non-execution of a court decision and another for theft. Thirty-five items were also seized.
Through this operation, the National Police intends to strengthen security in the two localities, deter possible offenders and anticipate the risks linked to the expected crowds in Tivaouane for Gamou 2026.
The system thus aims to allow the faithful and visitors to reach the religious city in the best security conditions.
