PRESS STATEMENT
-14 th FEBRUARY ,2018.

National Action for Quality Education in Zambia [NAQEZ] calls for the abolition of grade 7 national examinations.

These exams have ceased to have any significance in the education system.
Currently, the grade 7 examinations are not in any way assessment tools as all candidates who seat for them progress to grade 8, irrespective of the marks one obtains.
These particular exams have completely lost educational meaning. Anywhere in the world, exams perform evaluative and diagnostic functions. In a proper exam,

Pupils must be selected to grade 8 on the basis of superior performance in the G7 composite exam. This is no longer the same.
Today, all those who write this exam go to grade 8. Why then should the country waste
huge amounts of money on formality exams? It is either we reform these exams or abolish
them.
NAQEZ, s view is that letting less promising pupils into grade 8 is depressing the standards of
secondary education in the Country because it is reducing the quality of intake into grade 8
classes.
Abolishing these exams will save the country a lot of money which would be used in other
needy areas.
